Ek Balam, which means “Black Jaguar,” was at the height of its importance as a city during the late Classic period (600-900 AC). The chief pyramid, known as the tower, is (100 feet high, 517 feet long and 200 feet wide.  this wealthy city-state was known for rich carved stone, molded stucco ornamentation, stelae, a sophisticated network of roads, and numerous hieroglyphic texts. The stucco figures in high relief measure up to 12 feet. The figures of Ek Balam are original and unique in Mesoamerica.
